Oral history interview with E. James Adams, 1992 May 5.

E. James Adams served in executive positions at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., from 1950 until his retirement in 1973. The positions included assistant secretary and assistant general counsel, assistant treasurer, administrator, and secretary-general counsel. Adams described his background and the circumstances of his transfer to the National Gallery. He recalled Huntington Cairns and recounted Cairns's interests and working relationships. He described circumstances surrounding loan of the Gulbenkian collection to the National Gallery and John Walker's appointment as director in 1956. He described day-to-day activities and shared anecdotes relating to National Gallery personalities and the special one picture loan of the Mona Lisa in 1963.
